2008 NOV 15 The sewer was dark, wet, and filthy. Much to be expected, when one considered the location had been beneath the streets of the dirtiest city in existence. The Big Apple: New York City. The sewers couldn't be described as ordinary, in fact most plumbing systems were reliable in smaller cities. Yet the lesson had been learned during an August 14th black out, where much of New York Cities waste had spilled out into the East River. Since then, it would seem that plumbing and sewage had been taken less for granted by some of the city slickers. Yet there was something unusual about these sewers that had been taken for granted, that needn't be forgotten. Rumors and myths circulating through gossip and tabloids about monsters, leeches, and other unsavory creatures hiding in the depths. While there were rumors of invisible alligators and man eating worms according to the news archives in the 1800s, the more recent events had been what caught Abe's interest. Namely, the Northeast Blackout that had occurred on August 14th of 2003, 5 years ago. It had been the second largest blackout in history, effecting an estimated 10 million people in Ontario and 45 million people in eight U.S. states. Authorities in the year 2003 had explained the outage was caused by overheating, mal-maintenance, and electrical overload. Yet there were a few conspiracy theories that had seemed a bit more sound to Abe. These theories blamed the super weapons of Russia to be the true cause of the power failure. The Great Blackout had been the cause of a handful of deaths, and had been filed as an unsolved mystery within the B.P.R.D. As simple as the case may have been, Abe was curious as to what was going on both over and under the streets of NYC. Abe had double checked the case files, and it seemed that the assigned investigative unit had looked only in the obvious places. The reactors above the surface, they had completely overlooked investigating the cables that ran beneath the surface. Perhaps these very cables were responsible not only for the blackout, but for the rumors about sea monsters and man eating leeches as well. Flashlight out, Abe held his hand to the tunnel walls checking for any recent activity, or the presence of other beings. “It appears this tunnel has been abandoned for some while now.” Abe announced, turning to face the other agents in his company. One would have to be completely mad to enter such a place alone. In the less traveled places of the earth, it was advisable even to a senior agent of the B.P.R.D. to travel with a team, for safety. “Though it would seem we are not exactly alone.” Abe added sensing the presence of another creature. “If we don't bother it, it won't bother us. We're looking for cables.” He stated soundly, turning into a side tunnel. “Don't stray too far...”

just fake it if you're out of direction the lies wont hide your flaws TAG: RED / ABE. OUTFIT: HERE ONE LAST THING:
Liz had been less than thrilled when the team had been handed their latest assignment, and even less so when she had found out that it was Abe's urging. That was not to say that she was going to hold it against her blue-skinned friend and colleague, but one of the last places on earth that she wanted to be now was stuck creeping along the refuse lined tunnels underneath the city that they lived in. There were plenty of things that went bump in the night and plenty of monsters and creepy crawlies above ground to deal with, but going into the stinking sewers in search of them was not something that she was certain would ever appeal to her. Doing so while fighting back the sting of nausea already and while facing the prospect if being confined to the small cramped space of the sewer tunnels with Red while he was being sulky was... well, it was hardly on her top ten to do lists pretty much ever. But despite the fact, she had left the fight with Red standing and had gone and suited up, pulling on her bdu pants, her shirt and vest, and bolted on her pistol and her boots, wishing that she had the knee high rubber galoshes like she used to tromp around in as a kid.
She could remember hearing the tales, when she was growing up, of the horrors that lurked in the sewers. Alligators that had been flushed away down toilets when they had outgrown their small cages... squids and mutated or rabid rats... One would think that having seen all of the things that she'd seen and having beat the odds time and again, and all the monsters and ghouls and demons that she'd survive, that facing rats would seem like a cake walk, but for her, it wasn't. Abe was just as much at ease anywhere he went, and Red could care less whether he was above ground, below ground, flying, in the swamps or the forest of the Forbidden City, he was who he was regardless... for better or worse. Still, she put on the best face she could as they wound their way into the tunnels, trying mostly to ignore the smell and the urge to gag. She did wonder, for a moment, how much worse or better it would be if she did have to set something aflame in here, and somehow she didn't think it would improve things much...
Following a few feet behind Abe, she let her flashlight slide over the walls of slick bricks, looking for anything out of place against the worn red and tan stones, the braced electrical and phone wires from the previous decade, and the squeaking rodents that fled from the vibration of their footsteps and the light that weaved around them. "What is it that you think we might find down here, Abe?" Liz questioned, her voice echoing a little oddly around them. "Do you think that there was some sort of natural -- well, supernatural -- cause for the blackout?" Abe's comment that they were not alone, made her shift to the side for a minute, her light flickering down around her feet as she moved along the brick walkways that bordered the streams of sewage that flowed past them. She could trust Abe's assessment of the creature's nature, but she was a fan of the adage of better safe than sorry.
"You know Red didn't go to the training meeting this afternoon." She added, after a moment's pause, picking up her movements again to bring her a little closer to Abe and away from where Red's stomping footsteps reverberated behind them. "I found him in his room, watching the news and drinking beer. He couldn't even say he was sorry." Liz frowned, her agitation at the fight with Red still strong beneath the surface, especially since there had been little resolution to the issues at hand. She let out a sigh, knowing that this really wasn't the time or place but she didn't know who else to talk to about the situation. Abe had gotten put in the awkward and often uncomfortable situation of playing mediator before Red and Liz... and she had to admit, he'd been amazing about it. It likely had to do with his empathic nature, and his natural desire to see things working smoothly between the members of the B.P.R.D. but it couldn't be something he enjoyed over much. "I'm sorry, Abe. He just... makes me so mad sometimes."

HELLBOY
The sewer didn't really have that much of a bad smell compared to some other things. Hellboy, of course, didn't believe that to be truth. He believed this place stunk to high hell and that even hell couldn't be as horrible. He hated flies. Therefore, the crowd buzzing around him certainly were not his favorite guests at the moment. His boots were being stomped into the ground. Red was trying to be careful where he stepped. If there was one thing he didn't want to step into it was the poop of whatever Abe was after down here. The human hybrid didn't say there would be anything but Hellboy knew Abe and knew that Abe wouldn't have come down here because of the mystical flies of New York city. Abe had a ninety percent efficiency rate when it came to finding things that were weird.
"Alright, I get it, this is punishment Liz but that doesn't mean you have to walk away from me," he said aloud. If there was one thing Red couldn't stand was Liz not talking to him. She was more than just another woman. She was his best friend. Hellboy didn't exactly have a lot of friends. Therefore, he held her to a very high standard and whenever things didn't go well between them he felt like he failed her. Then again, he knew he failed her this time. All she asked was for a lousy training meet-up just so the two of them could do something together besides feed cats and The Price is Right.
He tried to catch up with the two of them. However, he was late coming into the sewer. Red was too busy sleeping during the trip to New York. Nobody bothered to wake him. Especially not Liz. His belt buckle was undone and boots untied. Trying to fix up clothing and run at the same time was pretty difficult as Hellboy was discovering. He couldn't believe Liz and Abe just left him behind like that. Then again, he didn't make himself very visible by hiding in the backseat in order to sleep without being disturbed. Instead of getting his rest Red decided to stay up all night and watch movies. He bundled a bunch of pillows next to Liz in order to give her the illusion that he was sleeping next to her.
"What is this? A marathon?" he asked aloud. Finally, he reached them. Hellboy wasn't out of breath. He did wonder how long he slept. The search party was a mile into the sewer already and yet he was still bringing up the rear. His eyes fluttered a bit as he narrowed his gaze ahead. Being much taller than just about anybody here his view would be invaluable. Not often did he use a flashlight. Tonight he did. His light was pointing down the length of the sewer.
A cigar was set with fire at the tip. Hellboy took a few puffs. "You know, normally I don't light up till the fat lady sings but she's whispering right now. There ain't nothing down here Abe. Don't tell me you dragged me down here for nothing. I'm missing my soap operas. Lisa was gonna marry Dan today and tell 'em that she's actually an alien from another planet," he joked. His words were seriously just a joke. Abe had a way of being right all of the time. Therefore, Red loaded up the Samaritan and put away his flashlight into his coat.
"What's hilarious is that we're looking for freaks and whatnot and we're not looking in New York itself but under it. Just thought that was chuckle-worthy," he went on to say.

Abe could tell that Liz was not exactly pleased with their latest briefing, and he had a sinking feeling that her displeasure stemmed from his idea to investigate the sewer system. It wasn't her nature to hold a grudge, at least against himself, though when one gave it some thought it was true that nobody really wanted to know what lay beneath the streets of New York. If the city itself was dirty it was nothing compared to the state of things underground. Red, of course, had been late. As he always was whenever Manning wasn't around to babysit him. This was something that both he and Liz had all ready come to terms with, though it would be nice if the demon showed a bit more interest in his work at times. Liz was well dressed for the mission, though Abe stuck to his usual wear, not being particularly phased by his surroundings as he had seen worse. For instance, he had actually had the honors of swimming through a sewer once or twice in the past, though that was considered nasty even unto him.
"Alright, I get it, this is punishment Liz but that doesn't mean you have to walk away from me."
Red's voice echoed through the sewers, not in a hostile nature, though it resonated loud enough to be heard clear as crystal. Meanwhile, Liz's light footsteps echoed through the sewer chambers behind him, a glowing dot gliding over the slick textures from Liz's flashlight. “I believe we might find a clue as to a different reason behind the New York outage.” Abe explained. “They said it was due to overheating, coupled with bad maintenance that led to an electrical overload to be the cause of the blackout.” He began, a webbed finger protruding into the moist air. “Though the conspiracy theories seem more likely to me. The conspiracy claims that the super weapons from Russia was the cause, meaning that if this threat is true, they can control the electrical output virtually everywhere via a remote control of some sort. I would rather have my head clear of this possibility, especially after the last incident is all.” Turning to face Liz he stated simply: “I believe we might find a reactor or a source of a remote in the sewers, since this is the last place anyone looks, and it is connected to virtually everything in the city above... I also fear that if it wasn't a man made creation, there might be some form of electrical bug, in a quite literal sense, that may have contributed to the cause.”
"What is this? A marathon?"
The familiar voice of a disgruntled Red reached his ears closer than before, he was catching up. A moment passed in silence before Liz spoke her mind. Liz wasn't one to talk to many people about her personal life, though Abe had always viewed it as a bit of an honor that she trusted and respected him as a friend, and confided in him. Abe was certain that Red would be able to hear if he strained his ears from his distance behind, although he was uncertain to if the demon was listening to their conversation. “No need to apologize, Liz.” Abe stated sympathetically. “You know how it is... We all have good days... And bad days. Maybe Red was simply in need of some alone time.” While it was true that Abe was friends with both Liz and Red, he knew that couples usually were met with some tension in the early stages. “Just give him some time. I'm sure he'll come around.”
The smell of a freshly lit cigar reached Abe, the sound of puffing right behind him. Slightly annoyed by Red's usual standpoint in regards to reality vs. sitcom, Abe sighed audibly, though amused. “I'm sorry to pull you away from your show. I didn't pull you down here for nothing, as I have all ready stated, I believe that the super weapons mentioned by conspiracy theories might be real, and if not there is some documented record of electrical worms of some sort in the BPRD files. Regardless of what we find here, I am certain that the blackout wasn't caused from neglect.”
”What's hillarious is that we're looking for freaks and whatnot and we're not looking in New York itself, but under it.”
“Or in the BPRD.” Abe added thoughtfully.

just fake it if you're out of direction the lies wont hide your flaws TAG: RED / ABE. OUTFIT: HERE ONE LAST THING:
"It's not punishment, Red, it's a mission. And you're the tall one. I'm sure you can catch up." Liz called back through the sewers after Red's complaint filtered through the tunnel between them. She was still frustrated with him, a fact that either he hadn't taken seriously or was planning to ignore until she got over it, or forgot herself that she was mad at him. Of course she wasn't entirely sure that that would happen this time. She was used to Red's humor. She was used to Red's sporadically childish behavior, his love of beer and all things feline, his appetite that never ended, and his voracious love of black and white television shows. What she had trouble with was the fact that he didn't seem inclined to let any of it go at all to make room for her, or to try and grow up any at all when it came to their relatioship at least....
Liz frowned in the general direction of Abe when the conversation turned back again to the reasons for them being here, trodding through the sewers when there were quite a few places they'd all rather be... pretty much, anywhere, most likely. The thought that anyone could have had such an ability, to control power output, or cut it off entirely, was more than distrubing, it was frightening. Populated cities, with hospitals, transportation control such as lights, air traffic, emergency response facilities such as fire and police. Even the Bureau, with its back up generators would be hampered if such a weapon were used in its hometown. "Who would have been capable of that sort of technology? Do you think it had something to do with Rasputin's efforts?" She questioned. She did not particularly like to talk about the events of years before, and she felt a shiver slip down her spine unwittingly.
She did not recall in any entirety what it was that she had experienced in those minuts that she was gone from her body, her soul trapped inside Rasputin and whatever hell existed within him. She remembered only the sensation of iciness, and emptiness, darkness that had been endless and eternal, until the sound of Red's voice had broken through. A link, a tie, the lifeline that she had latched ahold of, climbing her way out, pulled to him. He had refused to let her go, and he had risked everything for her.... Her head ducked down, a half glance given furtively over her shoulder towards Red behind her, and she could feel the outer layer of anger fade away. She turned her gaze back towards Abe, and the surrounding corridors, a frown pulling at her lips, and a small sigh escaped at Abe's reminder that she and Hellboy were still a work in progress.
She couldn't help but smile a little at Red's comment, shaking her head slightly though, in mild admonishment, though hardly genuinely heartfelt. While the word freak held painful memories for her, she could understand Red's intentions. The normal people would call them freak, and monsters, but there were just as many of the humans that could be classified as such. "I thought Lisa was the evil twin, and Isabelle, the alien." She commented, half idly, towards Red. So she wasn't quite ready to forgive him in entirety.... she could still carry a conversation on with him.
