A sudden explosion at the Xavier mansion which was initially perceived among the X-Men to be an attempted attack by an unknown assailant, targeted at telepaths. Both Professor Charles Xavier and Jean Grey went missing in the immediate aftermath. This rocked the team to it's very foundations, losing two of it's most revered members. Cyclops requested time off to tend to his grief over the loss of the woman he loved and the man who was a father figure to him. Second-in-Command, Storm took over the leadership duties of the team and running the school as Headmistress. Wolverine assists her in any way he can. For a time the school had to stop recruiting new students as the Institute was devastated in the mysterious attack.
Fast forward to one year later. A new Government sponsored organization has emerged. The MRD (short for the Mutant Response Division), was created for the sole purpose of detainment and subsequent registration of existing mutants. They have begun capturing mutants from all over the country in response to the growing swell of human protesters determined to protect the safety of humankind. This course of action causes Storm and Wolverine to begin rebuilding the bring the temporarily disbanded X-Men team back together again. Thanks to the generosity, wealth, and resourcefulness of former teammate Angel, the X-Men begins to slowly return to it's former glory with the rejoining of junior members Iceman, Shadowcat and many others along with the reconstruction of the previously demolished Xavier Institute with help from Forge. Unfortunately, without the necessary capabilities of a strong enough telepath to operate Cerebro, the possibility of locating some of the more globally scattered X-Men, other mutants along with the missing Xavier and Jean seems all but a distant dream.
Enter Emma Frost, former White Queen of the Hellfire Club and also a former Headmistress of her own group of students, The Hellions. She offers her help to the team and with no other available telepath to run Cerbero, the team reluctantly agree. Can Emma Frost be trusted? What is Project Wideawake and what is it's possible rammifications for mutants the world over? Will Professor Xavier and Jean Grey ever be found alive?
